Google search personalization: Turn it off

If nobody notices this, lemme explain. Google search provides a smart option called "search personalization". Google would collect the data of what you have searched last time and try to personalize what you want to see in the later search. Sounds good? NO, check this out.

Summary: Search Personalization makes you see "only what (they think) you want to see", kinda filter that filtrate your vision of the information in the cyber world.

I saw this TED talk many months ago and I just went through it. Later on I found out that Google really did this and it is really annoying. First I use the keyword to search the articles on facebook, however, when I use the old keyword again to search for the same articles, Google's search personalization did their great job by show up the things that "they think I want to see but actually I don't want to see"! Yeah, that article is gone...

If you don't want to lost your previous search result, or don't want to have the Google's filter, this link provides solution to fix it.

Final Thought: this TED talk is worth enough to spend your 9 min to watch it.

More Final Thought: Nima! You should read this article.

Which direction the world goes.

Recently, I watched the lateset TED talk show about the medical's future. The speaker gave a short touch on the place call "Singularity University". Its name attracted me so much, reminded me of the "Xavier School" where X-Men study. So I went to search engine and started finding what is that place.

Surprisingly, it IS an actual university.

This is the mission statement;
"Singularity University  is an interdisciplinary university whose mission is to assemble, educate and inspire leaders who strive to understand and facilitate the development of exponentially advancing technologies in order to address humanity’s grand challenges."

To convince myself to believe in the existance of this university, its location is in NASA Ames in Silicon Valley, which, probably, place where one of my friend interns there.

You have to understand my position first before move to the next line. At my first glance, this university seems to be....fashionable, fantastic, and unreal. It is like a school from the scientific fiction where the genius go and study together to lead the future of the humanity (Sheldon* might graduate from this school). I can say it is....dream.

So whatever the actual mission of the school ($25,000 tuition fee with 25% acceptance. Pretty high, huh?) I think it is the place where the dream come closer to the reality.

Whether this school would drive the future of the humanity or not, but the point is, there are people who intend to do that.

I am looking forward to see how this institute works, where there is around 100 people join this academic each year, and those people could change the life of thousand billion people around the world.

And I am not sure whether this place would bring the leader of the humanity's future, or just expand the gap amoung human's society.

*My favorite character from The Big Bang Theory series.

p.s. As we explore the world, this journey seems to be endless. The world always expand toward the place where we once call dream.
p.s.2 Like the expansion of universe (when the scientists explore the expansion of our universe, it seems to be expanding in all directions with the equal speed, a.k.a, expand around our position.)
p.s.3 the above line is far beyond this discussion.

Facebook Chat List on the Left of the homepage????

Distracted!

I'm distracted by the most absurd thing in the world I can imagine of.

The chat list that appeared on the left of my facebook homepage.

As I observed so far, the friends showing there seem to be the people who I chat with the most, also the person who I (unintentionally) stalked him meanwhiles. It is pretty understandable if they are the friends who I chat with the most.

However, there is A PERSON who always be there and I, kind of, desirably don't want to talk to him. I can say I rarely chat with that person. But he is still at the first row of my list!

Distracted!!!!

So I really want to know what the hell on earth bring him to that position (where I have only the people who I feel comfortable to chat with), or at least, how facebook determine the people on that list.

Yeah, I cannot go over this question until I find out the solution.

Mathematic behind TETRIS

Yeah, recently I'm enormously addicted to a facebook game name TETRIS BATTLE. It is just a tetris that you can fight with friends. Without clear reasons, I play it whenever I have free time.

I guess everyone know about how to play tetris. You rotate the puzzles and try to build a complete horizontal line and that line would disappear. The one who have less taller blocks would win the game.

Recently I found this game, tetris 3D.
It is not exactly like this, but pretty similar (source: http://downloadsoftwarestore.com/software/keyword/55555)

Oh yeah, I'm in love with something that have 3D interface. Basically, we have to rotate the puzzles in 3D axis and fill in the square surface. Later on I figure out that it is not that fun comparing with conventional 2D....so why?

That's because you are allowed to rotate the puzzles in 3 axis!

Let me explain to you. In 2D tetris, you have only one option to rotate your puzzles (CCW) to achieve all possible arrangement of 2D puzzle. Meanwhiles, in 3D tetris, you are allowed to rotate this 3D puzzles in 3 axis....I do some research, and I find out that we required only 2 axis of rotation for fully rotate the 3D puzzles in all possible arrangements!

Move to lower dimension puzzle, the 1D puzzle. There is only one possible shape of puzzle allowed in 1D, that is the line shape. Therefore, in this 1D tetris, you don't need any rotation to rotate it because the puzzle field would have only one dimension as well--the line field.

So I guess, you required 0 rotation for 1D puzzle. You required 1 rotation for 2D puzzles, and you required 2 rotations for 3D puzzles. And in general, we required n-1 rotations for n-Dimension puzzles. However, I really don't know how to test my hypothesis for more than 3D (and it would be fantastic to see it!)

I really don't know how to relate it with recent knowledge that I have. Maybe it is due to the degree of freedom because the formula is pretty similar (n-1). Anyway, please feel free to leave your discussion.

HTE diary: Art of Decision (3)

Oh, last two blogs we talked about how to make a decision, by finding ideas and how to choose the perfect one. However, there is another process that is also a good tool for making a decision, that is how to evaluate the "quality" of that idea.

I accidentally learn how to think like this in during HTE class, when we have a discussion about a business model. Business model is a schematic diagram that you draw for your company about how to get a resource, how to transform it, and who are going to pay for it. Other class calls it business value chain, it is the way that money flow. One of the most important thing for the business organization is knowing their business value and knowing how to create it. For example, at the very first years of Google under the organizing of Larry Page and Sergey Brin, even they gain millions of users but the company doesn't have that much benefit, because their is no business model there.

Once Eric Schmidt comes to Google and restructures the business model of the google by adding AdWords, a small blog of ads on google pages, this tool becomes the most powerful source of benefit of google and help google becomes one of the most biggest company (in revenue) in IT world.

Okey, now let's talk about how we can adapt the business model to evaluate our ideas.

The keywords are "input-process-output".

Input is what is the raw materials that we need for this idea. How to find it.

Output is the goal of our idea. What you get. it is equal to input+value. And value is the most important thing in this process. It is what you would earn from this idea.

Process is how you could transform input to output, including how much does it cost (in term of money, time, intention, people involved).

In my opinion, potent idea is what you can figure out three of these. It is useless to choose how to do it when you don't even "know" how to achieve it. At least you should know what you would gain from doing it, to make sure that it has a possibility to success, right?

For example, I'm thinking about production a short animation and send it to the competition during this summer break. The topic is "miss you miss you so much" which I considered it as easy (I'm so emotional), and what I would gain from winning the event is free air ticket to wherever in the world  I want (US!). I might ask my friends to help me about animation technique. Now I have everything ready, emotional feeling-animation technique-free ticket.

This is qualified idea.

However, considering my priority list, friends and relationship is in the second priority. I still have tons of ideas in my mind and some of that relates to my top priority, academics. Therefore, I throw away this animation idea and move to next idea, evaluate it and consider it with my priority list. This is the way I come around with a great idea for this summer. How I make a decision.

ps. So complicated. -_-

HTE diary: Art of Decision (2)

Last blog we discussed about how to generate the idea by brainstorming. Now we have plenty of idea but we don't know how to choose the perfect one.

As God of Apple once says, "Making the decision to implement an idea is just as important as making the decision not to implement an idea" (not exact words). This is how we can illustrate the importance of making a decision.

And the most powerful method (but not the easiest one) is to set the priority.

Priority is what you value in your life; studying, money, travel, friendship, relationship, work, family, reputation. It varies from people to people, from time to time.

My priority is here;
1. Study and Research
2. Friends and Relationship

I have only two levels of priority in my life. Sound simple, but actually it is one of the hardest thing in your life that you have to figure out. And I think the key of successful people is how they set the priority and do it accordingly. Some people set the priority from the internal need of themselves, for example, want to be rich, so it is money. Want to love and be loved, the priority might be relationship and friends. Other people set the priority from what is goal of their life, for example, my case, I want to be a professor, that's why I rank academics as the top priority.

How to rank it, it is not like "Okey, study is the top priority because I'm student and I have to do it.". If life is that simple, no one gonna fail in the class for sure. So I think the most effective way to figure out the priority is to look back in your past life, what have you done and gave you the most appreciation.

Then rank it as the top no matter what.

I always feel good when I do best in academics, for example, good record in transcript (I'm so proud of it). I can spend a day and a night working for my research paper without being hungry. When my paper is done, I feel even better than I have got a boyfriend or meeting a friend that I haven't met for so long. This example is pretty extreme, I intentionally make it clear to you how the academics comes to my top priority.

Having a priority list in your life is much better in the way that it would simplify your life a lot. When you come up with a dilemma or situation that requires a decision making. Look at the priority list, weight what you would earn from that action and then decide!

There is no right or wrong for the priority. My closest friend ranks her boyfriend as the top priority, family is the second, and study in the third. When I figure out this, I don't feel down anymore when she refuses us to go eat together after the class but instead heading back home immediately. I understand her. Someone even set only one priority in his life, and in my personal opinion, that's so cool.

HTE diary: Art of Decision (1)

Engineerings teaches you how to solve the problem--to find the exact solution, but in the reality, situation is different. There is no wrong or right answers, and this is the way it is, making a decision.

I always have a plan to my life, and prefer to have a short term goal. First summer, I decided to focus on my debate club together with doing some research at my university. Next summer is at National Lab. My third summer is internship time and now it is going to be my forth summer, after I graduate, I catch doubt what I shall do.

It is not hard to come up with idea what to do. For the people who always have a trouble with "I don't know what to do.", I can give you an easy keyword;

Watching

This is pretty similar to "how the idea is created" model in my HTE class, what to do is to watching what's going on with other people, for example, your role model is not bad idea. I go doing research during my first summer because my professor once went to internship during his summer time.

More important person to watch, yourself.

Continue the activity or project that you have done previously is also a good consideration. Sometimes, you might have a such a great idea during the school semester and you are such a busy until you can't do it. Think, now you have free time.

However, no matter ideas that come up to your mind, you should have a solid, clear goal there. This is very important because the success of your decision comes when you can achieve your goal.

Now you have tons of idea coming to your head, without evaluation the possibility or the value gain at all. The next step is to select the target idea, yeah, this one is much more cruel than the first step.

Every idea seems to be the best, but you couldn't do all of them no matter what--time, money, skill, or laziness are always involved in human life (I won't talk about robot-like person, he did everything  perfect in his perfect life). When I first come up with the this problem with my dad, he told me the way to evaluate it.

And we would talk about it in next blog.

It is unexplainable by Science

I'm science-oriented person, but please listen to the story that JUST happened to me today. It is something that unexplainable, thing that you called coincidence, or whatever, it is so amazing and already happened to me.

During a nice morning under damn hot sunshine of Bangkok, I walk to the school as usual. Accidentally, a random guy comes to greet me by his Indian accent English. I don't know who he is. Maybe he is just a foreign who lost his way.

"Your face is pretty, but you concern too much on friendship, or relationship. And it doesn't really matter to you."

.......What?........No clue what he's talking about. It's true that I'm kinda over thinking person but does he read it from my face?

"Umm, I'm thinking about my work." Truthfully, I'm thinking about my research project report.

"Oh..oh...you do. Do you know the (some name of the Indian God, not sure). He told me that you are going to get a good news within two-three days or within a week."

...And I'm going to have a final exam next week, such a good news...

"Please, come with me and have a seat. I can tell you more about the good news that gonna happen to you."

At this point I decide that this random guy has already crossed my safety line so I politely refuse him and leave as fast as possible. I meet my friend at the school and we discuss about this guy. Nothing important.

Until I come back home, and check my email inbox as always.

The Letter of Acceptance from the graduate school that I'm waiting for tooooooo long lies there!

It is already four months since I flew the application. Some universities, include Berkeley, already send me a mean regret letter a month ago. But now I've got it!

A good news comes, not three or four days, but within an hour.

Something that is Science fails to explain already happened to me, whatever it is, today is such a memorized day.

Go Crazy: Jazz Dance

Just recently my friend (Nikki) has posted the clip from "So You Think You Can Dance" Season7. I am not a big fan of this TV show--most of the time I just watch youtube when they used the song that I like, such as this;

I really like the way they convey the content of the song (meaning, feeling, and emotion) via the choreography. First time I have listened to "Jason Duerulo's Whatcha Says", it is just a sadness, disappointment, and so gloomy. But watching this dance, it is not only the blue feelings, but also the beauty of it.

I thought it is season 6, I went through other shows in the same style, only the hip-hop is good, and other are pretty disappointing.

Now I'm looking through a new coming season, and I got this;

OMG!!!! I recognize some of this choreograph! It is Jazz Dance! Even the word "Jazz" might make someone confused with the modern Jazz, or Jazz song, but I could say what I mean is kinda different form--it is Jass in Latin ballroom dance.

Damnit, I almost forget a Latin ballroom dance class when I was at grade 7.

Until now, you might scream out loud, this is not your Latin Jazz, see, it is Cha-Cha! Okey, this might be my false. At the first sight it seems like Latin Jazz choreograph, but later I figure that the rhythm is Cha-Cha. Sometimes the Latin Jazz choreograph could be used here.......

Okey, this is my very old knowledge and I don't think it is 100% precise.

End this half entertain-half educated blog with this;

Loren is crazy hot!

Absurdity 2: English

The first English book I have read is so call General Chemistry textbook by Raymon Zhang when I was in grade 10. The second one is Atkin's Physical Chemistry textbook at grade 11. After that I always use English textbooks for study all the time.

Surprisingly, I haven't finished any English literatures in my life.

Vampire Twilight: I started with two pages, and never read it again.

Harry Potter: around 13 pages until the limit.

Some random business book: within five pages.

So I figure out, maybe I have to choose the topic relevant to what I'm interested. So I end up with John Gray's Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus.

Haha, relationship.

And I finished it within 3 weeks, speak precisely, around 5 nights, excluding the time for Business Plan and Senior Project.

I like this book because of the atmosphere of love and intimacy in this book. I like the way the writer conveys the peace of love and power of understanding the different people. It could be used to explain not only the couple's relationship, but to understand your friends, your family, and general people.

And the most important thing is, I learn more about myself.

One thing to notice, the way of relationship in Western world is kinda different from that in Eastern. I can't definitely spot the difference, but it is nice to better understand.

While human is emotionless as robot and robot try to be emotional as human.

Hanson Robotics, found by David Hanson, tries to build humanlike robots. Not only the face expression and movement, he aims to mimic human's feeling, emotion, and dream....While some people are emotionless as robot, there are also people who want to make a robot feels like human. HAHA

Dinsaw the Robot, housed by CTAsia Robotics Corp. (Thailand). They just launched 100 robots in one of the top famous suki restaurants, MK.Chulalongkorn University produces high quality robotic engineers every year, unfortunately, most of them went to work abroad or go to business field. Therefore, Mr.Chalermpol Punnotok, CEOs of CTAsia try to attract those brains to work with him, and create the robots with the strategy of playing with human's emotion, for example, making Dinsaw have the big charming eyes.

Getting to know Engineering Innovator Club, Chulalongkorn University. The undergraduate student's club which focusing on making a robot. We joined  Robocup Small Size League since 2003 and won the first prize in 2008 (Plasma-Z). Now we moved to humanoid, and qualified for Thailand's champion league in 2011 (This year).

The enlighten quote from IT for communication class

"After working on IT for business for 10-15 years, I believe that using IT, company has no need to fire the workers. We can use the service minds and transformation to increase the potential of customer service of the company."

The most enlighten quote (and only one I heeard during two months of class) from Dr.Mario Gadet, IT for communication

Medical Tourism : Future high-tech business in Thailand

While patients in US might spend $100,000US for liver transplant in California, he or she could spend only $20,000US for that operation in Thailand, plus desirable traveling and vacation in one of the top 10 most beautiful countries in the world. “Medical Tourism” comes up with this idea since 2004. It is first stated in the government’s national policy “Center of Excellent Health of Asia”. These business seems to increase exponentially in their market margin along with the increasing in total expenditure of health care per capita and sky-rocking cost of medical care in developed countries like the United States and United Kingdom (as shown in Figure1). Worldwide gross medical tourism revenue is forecasted to grow from $56Billion in 2009 to $100Billion in 2012[1].

Medical Tourists: Who Are They?
One of the two biggest hospitals for medical tourism in Thailand, Bangkok Hospital, claims that 40% of its patients now are international, and a great proportion of foreign patients are from Middle East, Asia, and Asia Pacific respectively [3]. However, there have plenty of room at another parts of the world. Considering the US and Europe patients who are suffered from the expensive cost of health care in their home countries. Research from McKinsey & Co. analysts that most of the patients have no royalty to cheap medical care, while another prefers to have treatment at their home medical system[4]. However, considering portion of the patients who avoid waiting time in home hospital and looking for cheaper price in medically-necessary procedure, total four percent share is considerable as huge business value.

Why Thailand? : Watching another medical destination
The medical tourism phenomenon in Thailand starts during 9/11 attack in 2001, when Middle East patients found the trouble to travel to the States or European countries for medical care. Therefore, they changed their destination to Asia; Thailand, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong are their first consideration.

Comparing Thailand with neighboring country, Singapore; both countries located in the geographic area where the transportation from around the world is easy. Singapore takes advantage for having “relatively affordable health care service in a clean cosmopolitan city”[5]. On the contrast, Thailand has at least two hospitals which are already advanced themselves to a quaternary medical care unit. Our specialists received training from abroad including the States, UK and many hold American or Royal College certification. Moreover, Thailand gains eminence for the premiere-class nursing care by combining hospitality and elaborate service system; pick up the patients since the airport, take care of all documentation including Visa, traveling plan, and rebook the airline tickets for both patient and accompanying people. Thailand also gains advantages for the abundant tourism attractive places such as Pattaya, Chieng Mai, or Puket. Combining relatively low cost of medical treatment and living expense (around 50% of Singapore's, 33% of Germany's, and 20% of the States), Thailand is one of the top medical destination in the world.

Elderly people can choose to have medical treatment in attractive and relax environment
such as on the beach.

Future Direction: How long does it last and how to sustain longer.
Differ from the Latin-America countries whose major medical tourists come from the States and seek for affordable price, Thailand has major medical tourists from the Middle East countries because the specialists in their home country are shortage but the budget is plenty. This is the warning sign for long-term medical tourism business in Thailand; the Middle East countries would be able to product their own specialists within this ten years or use the technology transfer into their countries to reduce the oversea medical services (recently the UAE invited the healthcare providers including Bumrungrad, Bangkok Hospital, Johns Hopkins and Cleveland Clinic to invest the hospitals in al-Mafraq[6]). By this current situation, which we mostly rely on price differentiation, surely this business in Thailand would terminate soon.

We need to strengthen our potential to compete in this business area. Trying to achieve the target customers from another parts of the world like the States or European countries meet the huge barrier based on the technology level in Thailand. The budget to support the cutting-edge technology in medical field is as high as federal budget. Joint-venture with other countries who own advance technology might be the last spring-board after this business slows down in coming years.

Another way to possess medical technology is development the scientific research in our country, which would likely to happen. Thailand has the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) and four National Research Centers in Biotechnology, Materials, Electronics and Nanotechnology, but without unite direction of research development. It might be impossible to develop high technology devices such as MRI or CT-Scan by ourselves but for support technology, for example, biomedical devices in daily life like blood-sugar sensor, or synthetic organ grafts such as artificial knee-joint, Thailand has adequate potential to precede it.

Advertising is also a razor-sharp strategy for this business. Medical care is the business which strongly based on royalty of the patients and this is also a considerable factor for the lifetime of this business. Mouth-to-mouth recommendation from patient-to-patient, doctor-to-patient and doctor-to-doctor are required to increase the market share in this area. Setting up the medical care agency is successively done, for example, the US’s Medical Tourism Association (MTA) facilitate the medical tourists to pursue health care overseas and Thailand For Healthcare (T4H) facilitate the inbound medical tourists[7].

Conclusion: Dream business for the future of Thailand?
As long as people get sick, medical care is essential. Medical tourism is an alternative way to have health treatment together with relaxation via traveling. Thailand has many assets over competitors in medical tourism as quote from the Dr.Peter Jager, Country Head and Head Pharma Division, Novartis (Thailand); “There’s a lot of institutions already available here and there’s a lot of know-how and expertise, a lot of talented people and of course a lot of biodiversity and natural resources that can be used effectively in Thailand.  So altogether it is a pretty good package and pretty attractive for many companies to come in and do attractive work.”

My private year plan (at the age of 22)

Seeing China's Technology year plan which is recently announced is the inspiration for me to create my own life plan. I try my best to forecast what might be happened during my life in next half a century from now on based on what I have now.

By the age of:
22: two papers/conference per year (at least one)
22: graduate bachelor degree
23: Europe with HKUST Student Exchange Group
24: graduate master degree, by this age I would have 6 papers to list in my resume
27: some small some small businesses regarding science and technology
29: graduate Ph.D (now I might need to consider not only the quantity of my paper, but also the quality)
30: marry (hopefully) : I intend not to marry during studying time, I don't want to carry my baby to hazardous place like lab, and wish to spend full intention to my family.
30: post graduate
35: Nature/Science
36: Asst Professor
.
.
.
.

There is fews list of thing that I want to do

I have not much idea about the life after this. I know this is hard road, but I already decide to walk in this way. Cheer!

How dare you can call the US the land of liberty.

Why US people can't grow the plants on their terrace?
--Have you play "Plants vs Zombies"? You and Mr.Dave (your nice neighborhood) might be charged more than you can earn for all of your life for California's decorative plants tax.

Mr.Federal are trying to attack this house for plants tax.

Why US people need to pay tax for pet adoption?
--cat? dog? what if I want to adopt cute guy in my house? Ops.
Anyone's interesting in Cat Maid? (from: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=365056)

Why US people pay extremely expensive cost for call?
--The price in Thailand (and Hong Kong, I swear) is never go above 20cent per minute for national wireless phone call, but US's can do! Also receiver needs to pay for pick up call...and when it go to message box, automatically charged. So friendly phone providers.

Why US people pay for public parking?
--which I have never ever seen in Thailand. Police never arrests me unless I park in prohibited area.

"NASA space shuttle is reported to pay $1.25M for parking tax" (source of picture: NASA)

Americans are teaching their people to be smart at calculation.
--3 times a day, right after the meal, Calculate the 15% mininum tip that you need to pay. Why don't you just include it in the price of meal???

Believe me, in the future, you might need to pay tax for pregnant, give birth, send child to school, graduate, date, engage, marry, fired, hired, die, breathe, or even have 'individually entertainment on your bed'.

Speak frankly, I don't have any intention to criticize any certain people or organization specifically. I'm just too depressed from the Federal income tax refund thing that I'm working on.

People lives with dream.

Dreaming about something that already passed is not that bad, like the funny days in Hong Kong, but wish for everything like a friendship, or other types of relationship, to remain as it has been might be the most stupid impossible things. Yeah, as my friend's quote during my time in Hong Kong, "It is just a sweet dream that when you wake up, more sweety it is, more suffering you get".

Thailand always celebrate every single ceremonies happened in this world

Friends from another countries always ask me when I'm talking about Valentine's day, whether I, as a Thai people, have celebrated the Saint Valentine commemoration? Since we are not Christian (majority). Anyway, I should strongly confirm that Thailand always celebrate every single ceremonies happened in this world.

Thai people is not that easy-going people, we are super drama king/queen. We could seriously fight for someone (go google for the name "Taksin" for more information) even make a civil war! I could notice something like the relationship issue, which seem to be much more free in western world but super strict in Thailand, and over 80% of Thai song lyric are about love. As the contrary, thing seems to be less serious in Thailand, when we have a civil war (sort of) a year ago, people from one side wear red shirts and another side wear yellow shirts, later we have blue shirts and multi-color shirts group. And, to be proud of, Thailand has relatively low rate of devote.

Red shirts group and Mr.Taksin

Seem like from the movie? No, it is real in THAILAND. When we have a civil war and people give a rose as a present to the soldiers.

However, Thailand is called as "Land of Smile" for long long time. Long long times ago, I could say, Thai people is very easy-going and we won't deal with serious issue as much as what we are now. That is one of the reason that Thailand is very welcome for the foreigners as well as their cultures. We have good relationship with China for hundreds years, even I have Chinese blood in myself. We solidly immerse the western culture into our culture around a hundred year ago related to the first globalization period (western colonization) and Japanese around 50 years ago around the second world war, later on the United State (as the winner for WW2, laugh).

That's way it is very normal to see white guys working in Thailand, or Japanese elders in black is hurry to go to work. I read Japanese comics (manga), watch drama Korean series (yeah! more Drama), and I could speak English pretty well.

Besides, even we already have the holidays for Father (national, king's birthday's) day, mother day, children day, teacher's day, Labor's day, New Year day (1st of January), Thai's new year holidays (13rd-15th of April), another five days from Buddhism religion, cultivation's day, King Rama1's commemoration day, King Rama5's commemoration day, Suntorn Pu's birthday (ancient writer), etcetera.

The days listed above are the official holiday, mean that the days that the government offices are closed.

But basically, we also celebrate:

Chinese New Year: I love this day, when we have some sacrifice for our ancestors and god. We meet whole of family (30ish of people) and have some gamble for forecast the luck for incoming year.

Valentine's Day: teenagers always looking forward to this day! When boyfriend and girlfriend go out and exchange the gift, or a guy give a red rose to a girl to present his love. I usually make chocolate (last year, brownie, this year is sweet chocolate) and give it to my close friends and ex. Thanks for my friends from the same major who also brought rose and gave it to "single" lady in our major so I've got two roses this year.

I was born in November, no wondering nine month before November is Valentine's Day. (laugh)

White Day: I think it is Japanese culture (ホワイトデー, Howaito dē) when a boy or girl who receive gifts in Valentine's Day should give his/her back with the gift which is three times more expensive than that, or sometimes it is a month for a person to consider what they should respond for the relationship request. It is rarely to be found in Thailand, but I could see it sometimes.

XMAS: we won't celebrate Ester's day (even I've receive a huge Ester egg made from chocolate once year), but we seriously celebrate Christmas, in term of having a decoration around the department store or the office and house. We won't eat turkey, but some new generation parents give a cute gift for their children.

Do you know Lunar's day? It is in Chinese culture that is the day we celebrate the princess of the moon (and her rabbit). In China, there might be lantern's festival, every place is decorated with lanterns, but in Thailand, we just have a mooncake.

We also celebrate Loi-kratong day around November, this is Thai culture that we do the sacrifice to the godness of river by making the kratong and float it in the river and fire lantern to the sky.

Lantern's festival in Chieng Mai, Thailand

And we give importance for each person's birthday as well. I always buy cake for my family's members' birthday and my dad tell me to call my uncles or grandparents for their birthday. I prefer to make a gift by my own but sometimes it is just a handmade card.

So now you know why it seem like to be that I celebrate every single ceremonies in this little world.

Ps. Hey! California guys, I'm waiting for my gift for White day!. :D

[HTE diary class5] A scientist is just the another farmer.

Thailand is the agricultural country, most of our business based on harvesting products, rice, fruits, sugar. Long long time ago Thailand is called golden land, that's because most popular occupation of Thai people is rice farmer, and when the infinite-wide land is covered with golden mature rice.

Rice Terrace in Chieng Mai, Thailand (http://noynancy.wordpress.com/)

But consider the margin of rice business market, it is not comparable with another business like vehicle components export. That is because of the price of rice is very low.
Let me tell you one bed-time story, in the countryside, a farmer cultivates his rice on the soil land, take care of it for three months, then every villagers would come together to help harvesting. A fat guy from metropolitan buys ten cart of rice with a piece of gold.

After shipping to the capital city, a fat guy sells a cart of rice to customers with ten piece of gold. This is the way "middleman" become rich buy selling the products, rice, from a farmer.

I don't say that a farmer is stupid or that middleman is cleaver, this is how the world is, and it has been since long long times ago. Even now our government try their best to get rid of this "middleman" and try to shortening the value chain so all the money that consumer pays wound end up at the farmer who works hard to cultivate rice.

So, as the title is, how dare I call the scientists as the another version of farmer.

I declare myself as Engineering-oriented people, and when I took High-Tech class, I'm listening to the lecturers as engineer (and scientist); the lecturers are business men who are success to commercialize the high technology-based product. I like this course, since they are giving their idea on how they set up the business, find the investment, do the marketing and another brilliant business strategies which I have never ever heard of.

And I heard how those business men is thinking about engineers/scientists who responsible to these technologies......

The curious is not something like "how the business man deals with his hired engineer" but it is "how they think" so it is not the thing that could be consider as right or wrong, kind ethic issue.

My feeling is weird now.

The annual financial report from many huge companies report the budget in each year, only around 1% of the total outcome is for Research and Development section, and I'm quite sure that the engineers who work there earn a lot less than that.

As you know from my previous blog how long scientist or engineer need to wait until his/her research could be commercialize, and it is not three months wait like a farmer, but sometime more than three years, or more than that.

Speak to this issue, I'm not going to blame the entrepreneur, people have their own way to live, but what I want to emphasize here is, how we could make the farmer to sell his food by himself, without the middle man.

Maybe it is hard to do, to let the scientist do the business things, like finding the investor, create the business organization, or do the marketing. It might not be the ultimate goal of the scientist to commercialize his/her products, or he couldn't do it by himself. Having a partner is not that bad, but to make it fair in this capitalized world is the thing that REQUIRED TO RECONSIDER.

I don't want some business man come up with the sentence like "I make this technology. I did this happen" blah blah blah...even it is the fact that the one who did things happen is not himself, but engineers.

Most romantic gift I could imagine of.

The rose that was dipped into the liquid Nitrogen, make it frozen brittle crystal-like rose, and then throw it to the wall, and make it explode like scarlet in  front of me.

Technology of Love

Last last year, I read an article on National Geographic magazine, February issue (maybe), about science of love. And article begins with this photo (not exact):

Sorry, I don't know who you are, and I don't have any intention to ruin the romances of your wedding.

With an IMPRESSIVE caption: The groom is smiling fully of happiness since he is going to have a chance to reproduce his genetics this night.

This might be the main reason that I thought...maybe the Science and Love shouldn't come together. Or maybe the author just write it so straightforward, without any romantic feeling, so I'm going to represent the Science of love in another way. Here it is.

xxxx

Dear my Valentine,

How's your life going on? I haven't have a chance to talk to you that much, but please know that, in every of my breathing, if the device which be able to detect my thought in my breathe exists, all of my breath is only you.

However, the research about capture the people thought directly from our brain (via Electroencepthalogram, EEG) or through our breathe is still immature. So maybe what I could do is just trying to detect your emotion in our call. This speech recognition technology is already exist as the program to capture the mood of the customers using in Call Center, in order to analyst their feeling and mood in their voice. So maybe I could sense your emotion through your voice as well.

I can feel my heartbeat every time I think of you. You might not hear that, but there is the device namely Electrocardiogram (ECG) which can detect our heart beat signal. The frequency of my heartbeat increase significantly very time I think of you.

Many people says that there is a chemical signal from one person to another person, in order to express their feeling of love and passion, this might be the thing that we call Pheromone, or chemistry of love. One of research group in Thailand is going to develop the sensor to detect this chemical, hope it could sense my chemistry to you.

Another way to examine our love scientifically is to make the questionnaire and do some statistic interpretation. But how many question needed to describe our complicated feeling? I guess more than I can think of.

!@##%%^&*()_)(*&Y^TE

This blog is SO RETARDED! I can't writing this kind of blog anymore. If you want to know more information about mood/emotion sensing technology, please use the keyword that I provided above to search on google or elsewhere.

For the conclusion, I totally fail to merge Science and Technolgoy with Love. So let the Love floating around us like that. I don't want to interpret it anymore. (*cry*)

p.s. I'm not making fun of any person in this world, nah!  Happy Valentine's day!

Inception: special effect clips

Even people say now we can make everything (seem to be) come true by Computer Graphic (CG). However, let's watch these clips first and you would see why Inception should won the best special effect movie of the year.

1. Clip of Explosion sequence in Coffee Shop in Paris
Bird Eyes View

2. The Best Sequences: rotating hall pathway and zero-gravity fighting: See how Science, Engineers, and Entertainment merged together! Surprisingly Rotating Sequence is made from ACTUAL setting. omigosh. Let's watch the clip from movie first.
And this is production.

3. This is summary all the scene in inception as overview. 12 min is not that long comparing to how they made it. However, this clip doesn't show much special effect. One of the most memorized scene, safe house in snow mountain, is described here.

4. First I thought that train is special effect....

5. Morocco Sequence: how many actors in this scene.

6. Bending City: I totally have no idea how they gonna make this scene from reality, so only idea is CG.

7. Okey, let's end this blog with Making of the sound effect:

As Noland states in his interview, CG is good, but nothing is comparable to actual filming, we are really appreciate your hard work. Thank you the most powerful movie clip sharing community as youtube, as well as other people who posted these clip publicly. Finally, thanks Noland who created this amazing movie of the year!

[HTE diary class3]: when my research is walking out of laboratory.

"I wish to be a professor since I was in high school" this is the first sentence in every versions of statement of purpose that I write, and after that, "I want to be a professional in research area" come afterwards. Anyway, I also have another intention that I never ever wrote in my statement, but I would write it here, I want to make my research create mega huge impact to the world.

Seem like making my innovation commercialized is not that bad way to make it hit the entire world. See how the God of Apple integrated all the high end technology together and create iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad and another iP- that might come up soon, or the anti-AIDs drug that is useful for around the world. Once I was young, I discussed this topic with dad (who worked in the hospital for all of his life), but recently I might need to change my vision.

Now let's consider, if I want to create one alloy that I can use as artificial knee-joint. How long I need?

1. 2 years for material development: Maybe it would be this short, but normally it is longer than this. One Ph.D. student takes all of his 5 years life doing a thesis on certain material.

2. 1 years for test the biocompatibility in vivo: (cytotoxicity) you need to test whether the material is proved to add into human organ by plant cells on it, and check whether that cell die or not.

3. 2 years for test the biocompatibility in vitro: the material would be implanted into animal model, for example, rat or pig.

4. 2 years for test in actual human: and test it in human. After this step, our material would be approved by responsible organization and ready to use in medial application--I mean, to be commercialized. (Added by my professor, it might take another 6 years to wait for legally approval from FDA...)

With drug research required around 6 years as well, this incubation time might be shorter in the technology that no need to deal with biological issue. This period is reduced by larger budget or take forever if without money, and yeah, depend on invisible hands.

Let me give you other cheerful examples, Metallic Glass is developed from Caltech since 1950's but the first company commercialized this glorious material namely LiquidMetal is just established on 2000's. On the other hands, LED screen technology by Samsung take 6 months for development and distribution on shelf. Now do you have any idea what is that invisible hand I refer to?

Come back to our time platform. All I just a research period! Not include the time that you need to make it go to the market. Ideally, after finish developing technology, we might want to commercial it as soon as possible, but it might not. Three years ago when I first saw iPod Touch, I and my friend are talking about bigger version of iPod so I can use it as lecture note. Two years after that Steve Jobs presented iPad to worldwide.  I can say that the technology architecture for iPod Touch and iPad is exactly the same, even all the technology is already available about3-5 years ago. Why he need to wait?

The keyword of the day is "customer perception".

Slide from my HTE class

Do you see something here? If Jobs suddenly announced iPad with TV, maybe the market couldn't adjust their life style and except it and finally our product fail. So we need certain time to prepare our market and make our goal product acceptable, how long? who know.

Now I feel so tried, the reason is since it is very long lecture-style blog, or because now I realize how long I need to take before my research could walk out of lab.

Cloud Computing: when your computer is on the cloud

It might be 20'ish years late for computer to first hear the word, "Cloud Computing" since it is first introduced by Telephony, the first VPN Internet provider. So what is it? I can define the simplest definition of Cloud Computing (from Nano-Engineering view, who usually fight with advance technology) as the IT service that user send the input to program that stored on main computer via Internet, then the program processes and reply the user. It might sound unfamiliar to normal people as us, but by this list of Cloud Computing that I provided below, you might realize how much we are computing on the cloud.

1. Gmail/hotmail/web mail services: this is the easiest example of Cloud Computing which you have your own storage in main server somewhere in the world, where people can send the email to this place and you can excess to this storage wherever you have internet connection. Even in the past, you might need some program as outlook to access to inbox, but now you can excess it from just web surfing, and all the function would show there. So now can you think about another example of cloud computing?

2. Facebook/tweeter/blog and another social network: Sweet! If you can think about them. facebook is very general for us now, where we can chat, upload photo, and make a comment on your boyfriend's retarded picture. Think about how much storage Mark have to use for store all of the comments and photos from over thousand millions users around the world. I'm not wonder if one day the server for facebook would be down and all the photos gone without notify. People half the world would cry.

3. Organization intranet: I don't know whether you can register the courses online via internet or check your bank account online or not. But this is also kinds of cloud computing.

4. Visual machine: this is most conventional definition of Cloud Computing, where the clients can excess to certain program (legally) via the Internet connection. When I did internship at University of Maryland, I could use Origin from my computer via Visual machine, no need to install it (and I can't, I can publish data programed by illegal software). All I need is download visual machine platform and run whatever program I want.

So now, let's move to something that you might not know about them.

5. Google documents: I really like this application! Where you can crate documents or presentation slides on google website and give link to other team workers to access to this document and even real time edit it! You can talk to your teammates via small chat box and see their access log. However, I learnt that, even this application is perfectly useful for my team in Hong Kong (where I went exchange) but it is suck when I use it with my team in Thailand (my homeschool).
Check it out! docs.google.com/

6. Dropbox: I use another web server provider for document storage, but this website is very applicable for people who are looking for! My teacher upload the lecture notes on this website and send the email to her students to download it prior the class. And what I do is download it onto my iPad and open it in the class. Such a wonderful combination! (and save the environment by reducing the usage of papers).
Check it here. www.dropbox.com/

7. Wolfram alpha: How intelligent of your calculator? Basic calculator can do algebra, and scientific calculator can do finite integral. But Wolfram Alpha is more than that, this engine can do the infinite integral, find the derivative of two or more variables, actual it shows every thing that you can ask mathematically from certain expression.

Recently, I have checked the additional function of Wolfram, they added some sweet applications such as, what did happen in past 100 years when I fill "25 Nov 1988" (but not my birthday--how sad), or "Adam" is the seventh most common name in US.
Let have fun. www.wolframalpha.com/

Now you might have better picture how close this technology is. And I might need to change the title, your computer is not on the cloud, but now everything is floating around us, and we are IN the cloud.

PS.Sorry that I forget to add sources for photos, I respect all the creature of these photos and thank you very much for your kind Charity.

PS2. I'm not computer guy, if you know, please correct my understanding.
